Great Ocean Road Holiday, Wye River

A small section of the Great Ocean Road in Victoria

The Great Ocean Road is great place for a holiday when you have a baby because you don't have to fly on a plane for a change of scene.  My favourite thing about the Great Ocean Road is the abundance of comfortable, affordable family-friendly accommodation. For the price of a one bedroom hotel room, you can rent a whole house that can fit many more people. And if you splurge a little, you could rent a very nice big house (or mansion) and for the duration of your stay pretend it's yours and that you're rich!! Back to reality: we went through the "specials" section of  Great Ocean Road Real Estate Holidays and chose a very nice but modest house in Wye River.

We brought our own food and ate in most nights, but one day we brought back some seafood from the pier fish shop in nearby Lorne. It was not as fresh as I was expecting, but it least it looked good.

Unlike nearby Lorne and Apollo Bay, there are very few shops in Wye River; just a small beach and lovely leafy surrounds. But if you're after a quiet holiday, then it's perfect. Some places houses may have cots and high chairs, but more likely you will have to bring your own portacot and baby seat. Ask the real estate agent to make sure.

Melbourne Central Shopping Centre, Melbourne CBD

Eve was born around winter. I often felt trapped at home; wanting to get out of the house but not out into the cold. Going to a shopping centre was often a good solution.

Most shopping centres in Melbourne provide facilities for babies such as change tables, breast feeding cubicles and microwaves. Melbourne Central takes it to the next level by making the Parent's Room more of a retreat space for parents with little ones. Change tables are plentiful. There is also a boiled water tap, along with the usual amenities found in most shopping centre parent rooms. Eve really enjoys being able get out of the pram and stretch her legs by crawling around the carpeted areas.

Another favourite nook in Melbourne Central is the indoors Community Garden. It's an ideal space to laze about and enjoy the sun while INSIDE! Before Eve could crawl, this space was ideal as I could just put down a blanket and let her have some tummy time or read her a book from the shopping centre's free lending library. It's not such a good space for crawling as the ground is very sooty and the space is often filled with people lazing about.

On warmer days, we would also pop outside and spend some time in the grassy areas along Swanston Street and then pop back in whenever we needed.

The Junction, Preston, Melbourne

Plenty of room for strollers

The Junction is where we go when we want a relaxed, baby-friendly environment but still want to feel like adults. The decor and atmosphere aren't too shabby despite being baby-friendly. When we were last there,  some nice jazz music was in the background which wasn't too loud. There's plenty of room for strollers, high chairs and the staff are nice.

There is a quite wide selection of bistro foods. The food is quite average - can't complain but not very memorable. Portion sizes are usually pretty good. The price is quite reasonable and given the nice atmosphere, we can't complain. During this visit my husband ordered Barramundi with chips and salad. I wanted the same, but I get sick of chips being used as filler for so many bistro meals. They were quite happy to substitute it with potatoes and vegetables which I was quite pleased with. Overall, a nice casual (but not too shabby), relaxed night out.
